@Isntiton You must have been feeling some of that Iraqi Freedom we kept hearing about. Glad you got home safe, the most important thing. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm reading a book about Iraq atm, called 'We were Blackwater' by Barrie "Baz" Rice, similar to 'The Circuit' by Ben Shepherd. Both interesting reads if you can handle them after being their.

Ironically my uncle is a Nuclear Submariner and I was grateful for that when that war kicked off. Now I'm getting quite concerned as I'm unsure if they will let him retire which is coming close. I really shouldn't have read 'The Hunt for Red October.'

@KgcRed I would love to go to Eastern Europe again. I've been to Bulgaria but I didn't go any further. Its probably unlikely atm.

I am not sure about North Korea. Think I’d rather visit Pripyat and have a wander around to be honest.
I’ve lived in many countries over the years, having been posted across continents. Many of these get a bad rep but are fascinating to live in. I spent 3 years in Saudi and it was an amazing time. Too hot to bear but amazing. I was also in Dubai for three years. Given the choice, I’d return to KSA over Dubai any day.

Lots of places ahead of North Korea on my travel list. Maybe after reunification if that ever happens and I can visit the museum they'd put up in Pyongyang showing the atrocities of the current regime.

Think Vice did a documentary about North Korea back in the day. There is also North Korea schools in Japan that I think documentary journalism has been done. Interesting subject for sure.

Why on earth would y'all even think about getting near or in N. Korea? Sorry, my filter is gone today

If you go to the DMZ there's a tourist spot that has binoculars for looking at the other side. The North Koreans have built a fake village within range of these binoculars. It's supposed to show how perfect life is in the North so people would defect. It's called Propaganda Village (by the West). That is a weird, weird country that hates the West and has zero human rights. I'm curious, but I wouldn't set foot over there for anything.

@Veejur I agree, hell no I would never step into Korea but especially North Korea? Why anyone would want to visit a place where they hate people like us and they don't try to hide it. They let it known.
I mean ugly Kim's whole reason for building nukes is for the US.
Go over there and accidentally do something and in up in jail eating God knows what praying the US embassy can save you from ten years for something stupid. I don't mean to offend anyone, I just don't understand when there's so many other beautiful countries that love Americans.

@mancman The Great Hitchens! I saw him talking about this years ago. Ever since, I always think of him whenever North Korea is mentioned. Wow, did that man leave a body of work behind.

I'd absolutely love to go to visit the cities, mountains and countryside. Feel that way about most of Southeast Asia. The idea of a language barrier is a bit frightening, plus not knowing cultural customs and sticking out seems frightening.

Is it even possible to do? And to get out of it alive 😅 I wouldn't date

After seeing what those monsters did to Otto Warmbier, I'd say there's everything to lose and nothing to gain by traveling to that fetid country.
